With help from EMSI, Dr. Tim Brewer at Mitchell Community College has used labor market information to set the foundation for enhancing a program-focused partnership between MCC and the Mooresville Graded School District in North Carolina. After showing connections between programs and high-wage, high-growth occupations in Iredell County using EMSI and local intelligence from business and industry as evidence, Brewer and the partnership committee have a clearer picture of how to better align their curriculum offerings. In short, the goal is “to allow for a seamless transition from high school to community college,” Brewer says. “EMSI has allowed us to fine-tune our partnerships in a way that will potentially give our students greater opportunity.” Located in the central part of North Carolina, about 40 miles north of Charlotte, MCC is growing at a rapid pace. Its enrollment has risen 13% this fall compared to 2007 and a similar spike is expected in the spring. With that growth—and projections for continued growth—there is and will be greater demand for technical and applied science programs. “To find programs mapped to high growth was really most telling for us because as we plan with MGSD we must be conscious of what our local industry and workforce will be demanding.” Brewer says. “We can’t afford to have programs without student success.”
