Temp Hiring vs. Full-Time Jobs

Several suburban Chicago newspapers have brought to light the complaints of a former labor leader in Will County who feels county officials — including those at the Workforce Investment Board of Will County — could be doing more to find full-time jobs at area warehouses. Many warehouses utilize temp agencies.

To respond, Pat Fera, the manager of Will County’s WIB in Joliet, turned to EMSI data.

Fera said all clients are instructed to research a company as thoroughly as possible before taking a new job. And counselors try to make sure clients are aware a job is temporary and whether benefits come with the position.

Workforce Services has $4 million this year to train displaced workers and help them find new jobs. More than 4,000 people received job search help last year and about 800 were reimbursed for training courses, she said.

Fera said Economic Modeling Specialists Inc. statistics from 2010 show there are about 2,800 temp agency employees in Will County and of those, 640 work in logistics and transportation. So the percent of temp workers working in the warehouses targeted by Warehouse Workers for Justice is small.

    Hi EMSI,

    In 2007, County Business Patterns estimated 5958 temporary agency employees in Will County, whereas BLS estimated 2037. Can we assume you have used BLS data to provide this 2010 estimate? If so, why?
