Now live in Emsi Developer is a major update to our economy overview report. In redesigning the report, we added five key data points to help economic and workforce development professionals better understand and track their local economies. We also created better charts, graphics, and narrative to explain the data in the report. These updates give users more data about their region in one report.
Five New Datasets
During the past year, Emsi collected feedback on the most important data points our clients needed for their research. After taking a hard look at the results, we added the following datasets to Developer to complement what we already had.
Median Household Income
This data comes from the ACS five-year survey data (2011-15) and is often a better indicator of regional earnings prosperity than average earnings per job.
Monthly Unemployment Number and Rate
This data comes straight from the BLS. We include trends from the previous five years as well as monthly rates for the most recent three months.
Monthly Labor Force Number and Rate
This data uses the BLS labor force number that captures those working or actively seeking work. This is often a better metric to determine a regional labor pool than the total number employed. When looking at the labor force participation rate, we combine the BLS number with Emsi’s demographic data for those 15 years and older to calculate the labor force participation rate.
This is another addition from the ACS five-year survey data (2011-2015) and something numerous clients requested. This data gives the veteran population for any county, MSA, or state.
Property and Violent Crime
Crime data is a leading indicator of quality of life. This data comes from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics and provides property and violent crime data for the previous year (currently 2016).
Five New Features
With the new features, we iterated on our current and new datasets to provide improved visuals, narrative, and data presentation. We also now include the underlying data for each of visual and graphs in our exports. Our users enjoy being able to use Emsi’s preset visuals, but raw data now makes it easier for our users to spin up new custom graphs for their specific use case. Here are the five new features we added:
- Updated graphs and visuals
- Expanded top industry/occupation lists
- Detailed data table with every graph
- Jump-to buttons to dive in deeper
- Added narrative
We are excited to unveil this new economy overview to help our clients get the community insights they need to make critical decisions. To learn more about this release and the data metrics included, email Sheridan Benard or call 208-883-3500.
