Dave, in terms of which states are doing better or worse than their expected job growth in the last few years, yes -- this is an indicator of competitiveness in the labor market. North Dakota's oil & gas boom has had ripple effect in other industries (e.g., construction, transportation, retail trade, etc.). Nevada's construction downturn has been dramatic, while even its strongest sectors (health care, educational services, etc.) have not performed markedly better than what we'd expect given national trends.

Have you really sussed out competitiveness? I mean they find oil in North Dakota, so now they're "competitive?" And Nevada has enormous overhang from real estate bubble, so it's "uncompetitive?"

So....what makes a state do badly, other than Nevada and Arizona doing so because of construction? I'm particularly interested in Idaho. Thanks!

RN's with an associates degree are in high demand in my area. I'm in the 2nd year of my program now and have already been offered $28.00 per hour at a local facility with a generous raise after a 6 month probation period. I think that's an extraordinary opportunity in light of the fact that I haven't even received my degree yet and have only had clinical rotations at this particular facility.
