Using Analyst, our web-based labor market analysis tool, we took a look at the 20 highest-paying occupations in the US for 2010 and 2011. The top 20 highest-paying occupations comprise roughly 5.5 million jobs with an average wage of $55 per hour. Most of the jobs are either health care or management type jobs.
The full list can be found in the table below and graphic (click on it for a larger version). But first, here are few observations:
1. First, quite of few of the jobs fall into the health care sector. Physicians and surgeons as well as pharmacists have the largest employment and are slated to grow by nearly 30,000 jobs. Each health-related occupation on the list is slated to grow (not surprisingly). At nearly $86 per hour, oral and maxillofacial surgeons is the highest wage.
2. Management jobs are second on our highest-paying lists. The pay is slightly lower than what is seen in heath care, but employment is very high. Between CEOs and operation managers, there are roughly 2 million jobs at a pretty high hourly wage. Natural science managers and engineering managers are the highest-paying jobs in this sector. In addition, most of these jobs are slated to have some form of short-term growth.
3. The other jobs fall into legal, transportation, science, and engineering. The only jobs projected to decline are airline-related occupations (pilots and traffic controllers).
