At EMSI, we believe that colleges are in a key position to improve employment across the nation. This is because, in our day, employment and economic prosperity are closely linked with our ability to produce a skilled workforce that is responsive to the needs of the labor market.
When it comes to demonstrating your college’s worth and talking about how you fulfill this mission, it is very powerful to have stories and real data that speak directly to your impact on the economy through the lives of your students.
As a result, we are pleased to introduce a new report called the Student Résumé Analysis that will help colleges better understand the performance of past students.
Demonstrating what happens in students’ lives after they leave college is a huge logistical challenge. Too often, expensive and incomplete surveys and mere anecdotal proof are all that colleges have to work with. The SRA changes that. Unlike the normal college survey that costs a ton and has a very slim response rate, the SRA is based on a huge assembly of data that is already available, giving you the best intelligence on your former students based on their own résumés. Furthermore, because we know what data is available, we can tell you how big the response rate is going to be before you invest, which gives you a preview of just how helpful the new data will be. And then it can always be used to complement your current survey efforts.
The SRA also works well with EMSI’s Economic Impact Study. While the EIS demonstrates the economic contribution of your college to the community, the SRA gives real-life examples of how that is played out in the lives of students and their regions. There’s nothing like data-based stories to give talking points to your presentations as you promote your college. With the SRA, you can prove your value and inspire the community to support your school.
How Does It Work?
EMSI pulls together résumés to produce an analysis of the performance of your past students — who they work for, where they work, how much they make, and what programs they took. The benefit is a report that details your college’s labor market outcomes. It allows your college to follow the paths of past students and gain insight into how effective you have been.
What Will It Tell Me?
The Student Résumé Analysis answers three big questions:
- Who is hiring my students?
- What are the wage and employment outcomes of specific degrees and programs?
- Where do my students move?
Now you can use robust, real-life examples of how your students are engaged in the labor market after they leave college to tell your college’s story. Statistics are great, and are made even better with real, tangible evidence. The report also includes key descriptions of the data, clear graphs and charts, and handy support materials appropriate for public presentations.
How Should I Use It?
The SRA is great for college presidents who need actionable, strategic proof of their school’s value. In addition, it’s valuable for institutional researchers who need answers to the most common questions about former students: Where are they? What are they doing? What are they earning?
