“What are you into?” That’s the question a series of new videos from North Central State College is asking and answering with data from Emsi Analyst.
The project began when NC State institutional research director Tom Prendergast visited a conference and noticed a community college delivering its institutional research reports via whiteboard videos. Inspired by the college’s ingenuity, Prendergast helped NC State get a one-year grant for the necessary video technology and “found the perfect project”: a career speaker series with Ohio State-Mansfield.
Prendergast and career development coordinator Troy Shutler developed six video scripts and reached out to a student, Abby Mendell, in the school’s video communication & media technology program. Abby converted the scripts into whiteboard-type videos as part of a work-study program. Each of the six planned videos was designed to showcase a different cluster of occupations ranging from those that work in the outdoors to those that work in writing, photography, or drawing and beyond.
The final result was a set of videos that serves as a great example of how institutional researchers can work closely with career counselors to help students. It is also a creative look at how researchers can combine data and media technology to create career awareness for students.
