If you’re graduating this spring, here’s a little good news: The Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that job openings were still going up in February.
Stories of city-level layoffs are likely to become much more common in coming months. But recent employment data trends indicate this isn’t a new story — local government jobs in most states have declined since 2009.
The Economist has a great look today at the US labor market, which it terms as “perplexing” in light of the latest jobs report. While just 36,000 new non-farm jobs were reported, the unemployment rate fell to 9.0% — after being 9.8% just two months ago.
