– Don’t want it to go all over me, here.
– Simmer down.
You’ll get to your beer soon enough.
– We’ll have our 15 seconds of fame.
– Welcome to beer with Emsi burning glass.
Today, I am drinking an
anti-hero India pale ale
from Revolution Brewing in my
hometown of Chicago, Illinois
– And I’m drinking
Samuel Adams Boston lager
brewed in both Boston and Cincinnati.
Slowly.
– Expertly done.
– Thank you.
Little spill, there.
– [Off Screen] Now that’s
a (indistinct) pour.
(laughter)
– Cheers.
– Cheers!
– I’m Joel Simon, vice president
for workforce strategies
– And I’m Dustin Lester,
vice president of consulting.
We co-lead Community Insights Consulting,
and we’re excited to join the
ranks of other dynamic duos,
– Jordan and Pippin.
– Starski and Hutch.
– Sonny and Cher.
– Simon and Garfunkle.
– And now, Dustin and Joel.
And if it isn’t obvious, we
compliment each other very well.
– Let’s cheers again.
– We’re getting, we’re
getting through it, right?
Another obvious fact is that right now
communities are tackling
big transformative change.
The kind of change that
is once in a generation.
Perhaps even once in a lifetime
– The federal government’s
economic development administration
is providing three billion dollars
in strategic grants to help
accelerate economic recovery
and jumpstart new and
more equitable approaches
to economic and workforce development.
– But regardless of whether our
region receives EDA funding,
now is the perfect time to rebuild
in a way that supports the kind
of future that your residents want.
– So if this unique moment in
history is inspiring you to
help your region realize its best future,
here are four questions to be asking.
One,
what are your region’s
unique and special assets?
– Legacy industries, unique skillsets
abundances of educational institutions.
What existing assets can
be leveraged to create
new economic activity?
Remember making the
most of this opportunity
doesn’t mean you have to
completely reinvent the wheel.
(upbeat music)
– [Off Screen] There we go.
Nice.
That’ll be the thumbnail
– I love it.
(laughter)
Two, Who is ready to take
advantage of those assets.
but for whatever reason just hasn’t?
Or at least not yet?
– Our partners at N power and
the command shift initiative
have called out the fact that
women of color just aren’t
well represented in lucrative
and growing tech jobs
and employers have great
difficulty in correcting that.
Well, we found large
numbers of diverse workers
in jobs that use tech
skills, but are outside
of the tech industry.
These workers are a great source of talent
for the tech sector,
and can be upskilled to
address worker shortages.
What are we drinking to this time?
– Um? A great one, a great week.
– A great week in mosque.
– A great week in mosque.
Three.
the data tells us where we
can engage more residents
but what do we do to make that happen?
– Tipping point, another
Emsi Burning Glass client
supports a number of
job training providers
in San Francisco.
They identified specific career
pathways into high demand
and living wage occupations.
Armed with this information,
they created guidance for
those training providers
so they can use the data to
inform their specific programs.
These are the kind
of data driven and targeted
efforts that are needed.
– I’ll drink to that.
– [Off Screen] Cheers to that!
– Four. How can we invest
in people in a meaningful
and efficient ma-?
Lemme try it again.
I thought it was,
– [Off Screen] I didn’t see.
– I went off script and I looked over.
How can we invest
in people in a meaningful
and efficient way?
– We’ve not always recognized, developed
or used all of the talent that we have.
We can’t afford to do that anymore.
Helping people realize
their value in the economy
and the community as a whole
starts with identifying
and connecting them to
jobs based on skills.
The skills that they bring
to the table and the
skills that they build
towards specific local opportunities
– Answering these questions
and then deploying strategies
at scale requires deep and rich data.
– Community Insights
Consulting is here to help.
We do all of these things.
(fanfare)
(typing)
But our favorite is when the communities
ask us a question that
we’ve never heard before.
– And we’d love to hear
what your region is doing.
One of the best parts
of this work is we learn
so much from each community
we work with.

– Thanks for joining us for a
beer with Emsi burning glass.
– I’m Dustin
– And I’m Joel,
(laughter)
And that’s all she wrote.
