No unicorns, no ninjas, no superheroes.
It’s just not gonna happen.
Today I am drinking a peach black tea.
Nixie. Is there alcohol in it?
Maybe. Maybe not.
Very good. It’s like a Georgia peach.
Let’s do it.
Hi, I’m Bre house.
If you are looking for people to hire,
let’s talk about how your job posting
may be working against you.
Here at Emsi Burning Glass
we analyze millions of
job postings every year
and we’ve seen some real doozies.
For example, this job posting combines
five wildly different skill sets.
An IT troubleshooter
who can plan travel,
manage a schedule, write
presentations and speak Italian.
Good luck with that.
This restaurant group posting
asks for six years experience
for an entry level
graphic design position.
Six years experience, entry level?
Think about that.
And this data science internship
is asking for a bachelor’s degree
and five to seven years
experience or an internship.
The problem is many job
postings contain lofty,
outdated or unrealistic requirements.
Instead of attracting applicants,
it scares them off.
And with only 56 unemployed
workers for every 100 openings,
your postings have to stand out
because if a job doesn’t look perfect,
the next one is just a few clicks away.
Gotta get a little of
this peach black tea.
So, here are a few tips from our data.
First, keep it simple.
Ask for exactly what you need.
And if you’re looking for
a social media specialist,
then say so.
If you need someone who can code Python
but are willing to train them,
then say that.
But don’t let lofty descriptions
of the ideal candidate
disqualify everyone
except Captain America.
He already has a job.
And that brings me to my second point.
No superheroes, no unicorn, no ninjas.
In other words, make sure the job title
reflects the job.
Don’t ask for a UX rock star
unless you’re auditioning guitar players.
(guitar strums)
And if you’re looking for a UX designer,
just say that.
We saw one job posting for Jedi/wizard
and that was a job title at a bakery.
Magic powers are nice to have, sure,
but do you need them to frost cupcakes?
Need help on where to start?
Check out our open titles
database at our website.
Third, consider building
your posting around skills.
Many employers are finding pockets
of hidden talent by
de-emphasizing college degrees
or other rigid requirements
instead of focusing on skills.
Here at Emsi Burning Glass,
we work with some of the
biggest institutions,
governments, and Fortune 500 companies
across multiple continents,
helping them understand the talent market
and take advantage of
current and future trends.
If you are an employer,
tools like our Skills Library
and Open Titles can help you fine tune
and optimize your job postings
and understand what
skills you really need.
And for universities
and government planners,
our tools show what skills are in demand
and what skills strengths your region
can leverage to attract employers.

or in my case, peach tea.
Have a great Friday.
