– [Man] Welcome back, Drew.
– It’s good to be back.
So today I am drinking Shiner Bock
out of Shiner, Texas.
Population 2069.
(indistinct)
(pleasant music)
It’s very good.
Great beer from the great state of Texas.
Welcome to Beer with Emsi Burning Glass.
Let’s get started.
It seems hard these days to
find things we can all agree on,
but I think there’s one
thing everyone can agree on.
We love top 10 lists,
whether it’s the top 10
plays on SportsCenter
or the 10 best albums of all time.
We love making top tens reading about them
and debating them.
And Emsi Burning Glass is
here to give the people
what they want.
We have just released our sixth
annual talent attraction scorecard,
where we rank counties
on how well they’re doing
at attracting, developing
and retaining talent.
So here they are folks,
the top 10 large counties
for talent attraction.
Number 10 Lee County, Florida.
Forget the notion that
Florida is just for retirees
and snowboards,
for retiring and.
Forget the notion that
Florida is just for retirees
and snowbirds.
The working age population
is up 7% from 2016 to 2020.
And those folks are filling the
more than 9,000 jobs created
during that time.
For number nine, we’re sticking
with the sunshine state
situated in Central Florida.
Polk County has steadily
risen in the rankings
all the way from number 188 in 2016.
Number eight, Gwinnett County, Georgia,
jumping 139 spots.
The success of this Atlanta suburb may be
in what it doesn’t have,
an employment-base buoyed
by the public sector.
Gwinnett has 20,000 fewer government jobs
than would be expected
for community of its size,
meaning more traded
sector dollars and jobs.
Number seven, King County, Washington,
or depending on where
in the country you are,
Warshington.
Some people like to get the R in there.
(laughing)
After dropping out of
the top 10 last year,
Seattle, the home of coffee,
grunge music and tech is back.
Number six, Montgomery County, Tennessee.
Montgomery County had the
second largest ranking jump
of counties in the top 10,
climbing 109 spots from last year.
Just north west of Nashville,
Montgomery has a strong
manufacturing base,
an educated workforce, and
it’s attracting new residents.
It’s seen a 96% rise in migration.
– [Man] Cheers.
– Cheers.
That was a double clink.
Now, it’s time for the rapid fire
and Texas portion of the top 10.
Coming in at number five,
Williamson County, Texas,
number four, Collin County, Texas,
and number three, Denton County, Texas.
All three saw their education
attainment rise by 20% or more
and jobs grow by 12% or more.
And that’s why I’m drinking a Texas beer,
little thing called foreshadowing.
Number two is Clark County, Nevada.
That’s right, Vegas, baby.
Even with a 3% drop in jobs,
Clark County saw skilled jobs rise 9%
and education attainment 19%.
Nevada is also on the
forefront of using skills to.
Nevada is on the forefront of
using skills to connect people
to growing local industries.
We wrote about that here.
And with their second straight top finish
and fourth top finish in six years,
number one in talent
attraction and inner hearts,
Maricopa County.
The Phoenix area continues
to grow jobs well beyond
what would be expected based
on national and broader trends
with 150% growth in migration.
It’s obvious talent sees
the opportunities as well.
So those are our top 10 large counties
for talent attraction.
You can explore all the rankings here.
And be sure and download this
year scorecard for strategies
to help develop your
community’s talent pool.
I’m Drew and thank you for joining me
for Beer with Emsi Burning Glass.
Cheers.
